Human/Nature: Seven Irish Artists

7 March – 27 April, 1997

Mainly created between 1991 and 1996, at a time when peace at last seemed possible (ironically, more so last year than this), the works of these contemporary artists from Northern Ireland and the Republic deal with individual memory and psychology, the power of the ancient past, and the constant physical presence of the land itself. Consciously avoiding "The Troubles" as subject matter, these (mainly younger) artists have focused on more intimate personal histories, often in relation to nature and natural processes. Their stylistically varied paintings, drawings, sculptures and mixed-media installations employ a wide range of materials, including concrete, turf, fibre, steel, glass, driftwood and natural dyes. This exhibition originated as part of an exchange between Northern Ireland and Newfoundland, and has been co-curated by Pat Grattan and Bonnie Leyton, circulated by the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador, with support from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the British Council.
