The Hongkong Bank of Canada Photographs of Children: 150 Years

27 June – 2 September, 1990

This major exhibition, is the first of its kind to focus on children and childhood. Inspired by Edward Steichen’s famous Family of Man exhibition and book, the show illustrates children in all their variousness and their lyrical uniqueness. The images explore the bravery, tenacity, and vulnerability of children, their troubling sorrows and their joys. Well known photograph will be on display by the great pioneers of photography: Lewis Carroll, Gertrude Kasebier, Alfred Stieglitz, Julia Margaret Cameron, Dorothea Lange, Russell Lee, Edward Steichen, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Frances Flaherty and Eadweard Muybridge along with images by André Kertesz, Diane Arbus, Edward Steichen, Bill Brandt, Robert Frank, Richard Avedon, Annie Liebovitz, Irving Penn and Francesco Scavullo. Over 50% of the exhibition will contain work by Canadian photographers such as William Notman, B. A. King, Barbara Cole, David Laurence, Carol Marino, Joan Moss, Thaddeus Holowina and Deborah Samuel.
