Communications and Community Engagement Coordinator
Job location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
Term: May 25, 2026 to January 15, 2027 (approximately 34 weeks)
Hours and pay: $25/hour, 30 hours per week
Work arrangement: Hybrid. Typically, 3 days on site and 1 day remote each week (30 hours across 4 workdays)

About Dalhousie Art Gallery
Dalhousie Art Gallery presents contemporary and historical art exhibitions across a wide range of media and styles. Through exhibitions and public programming, the Gallery works to make art accessible, promote visual literacy, and support meaningful public engagement. Collaboration, equity, and critical inquiry are central to our mandate, as is building long-term relationships with diverse communities on campus and beyond.
As a university art gallery, Dalhousie Art Gallery also plays an important role in campus life by supporting teaching, research, and collaboration with students, faculty, and community partners.
Position summary
Reporting to the Director and Curator and working closely with the Gallery team, the Communications and Community Engagement Coordinator supports communications, marketing, and outreach for exhibitions, public programs, and community engagement initiatives. This position is well suited to an emerging communications professional interested in gaining hands-on experience in a university art gallery environment.
Key responsibilities

Write, edit, and publish content for the Gallery’s website, e-newsletters, event listings, and social media channels

Support promotion of exhibitions and public programs by coordinating timelines, assets, and campaign rollouts

Draft communications materials including press releases, media pitches, program descriptions, and promotional copy

Support media relations workflows, including outreach, interview coordination, and tracking coverage

Assist with campus and community outreach in collaboration with university and community partners

Track and organize communications materials, including image credits, captions, permissions, access information, and event details

Create or coordinate basic visual assets for digital promotion with staff and contractors, as needed

Contribute to reporting on communications activity and outcomes
Required qualifications and skills
-
Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to adapt tone for different audiences and platforms

Experience with digital communications and social media content planning and publishing

Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with staff, artists, students, and community partners

High attention to detail, especially with dates, credits, permissions, accessibility, and event information
-
Comfort using Microsoft Office, shared calendars, cloud-based file systems, and common collaboration tools
Assets

Experience with Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite

Familiarity with photography, video capture, or basic editing for short-form content

Experience with press relations, event promotion, or community outreach

Experience working in arts, culture, museum, gallery, non-profit, or post-secondary contexts

Interest in contemporary art, public culture, and community-informed programming
Education and field of study
A diploma or degree in a related field is preferred. Relevant fields may include Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, English, Art History, Museum Studies, Curatorial Studies, Visual Arts, Cultural Studies, Media Studies, or related humanities and social science disciplines. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

This position is funded in part by Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage (YCW-BCH). Applicants must be registered in the YCW candidate pool and meet YCW-BCH eligibility criteria. To be eligible, applicants must:

be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada

be legally entitled to work in Canada

be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment

be a college or university graduate
Priority may be given to graduates who have not previously participated in YCW internship programs and who are unemployed or underemployed.
