How to Make an Exhibition Proposal
to the Dalhousie Art Gallery
Dalhousie Art Gallery welcomes exhibition proposals from artists and
curators. Completed applications may be submitted at any time, but expect
a wait of up to three months before notification. Note: We do not accept
e-mail or faxed applications at this time. Mail your proposal to: Dalhousie
Art Gallery, 6101 University Avenue, Halifax, NS, B3H 3J5.
Proposals should include the following information and documentation:
- a one-page description of the exhibition or body of
work proposed (including the curatorial premise, if you
are a curator);
- slides or photographs of the proposed work or works-in-progress
(or videotape/CD- ROM/DVD excerpts if you work in new media)
and some indication of previous work. (Please provide adequate
documentation for all images of works, ie. a list of titles,
sizes, media, dates, etc.);
- selected previous exhibition catalogues of artist’s
work or curatorial writing (if any) and selected recent
exhibition reviews (if any);
- an up-to-date resumé; and
- a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you wish your
materials to be returned.
The Gallery is a complex space that can be divided into several exhibition
areas according to the size of the exhibition. (See Gallery plan.) Exhibitions
usually last between six and eight weeks and may occupy the whole Gallery
or one or more smaller exhibition areas. Please indicate if you are interested
in being considered for a solo or group exhibition. The Gallery follows
CAR/FAC fee guidelines, and negotiates fees with guest curators according
to the conditions of the project. Exhibitions that are programmed in our
Front Alcove space (usually emerging artist shows) receive a reduced CAR/FAC
fee.
The Gallery’s Exhibitions and Programming Committee meets approximately
four times a year. We present an average of 12 exhibitions annually, but
may receive up to 60 applications for these spaces. Each year we present
at least one permanent collection exhibition (organized by our curator),
host traveling exhibitions of national or international contemporary or
historic works (important in fulfilling our broad mandate), and present
several in-house curated exhibitions, as well as the annual Dalhousie
Student, Staff, Faculty and Alumni show. Because of these scheduling pressures
and the need to obtain outside funding, exhibitions may be planned up
to three years in advance.
If you have any further questions, please contact
the Gallery office.
